If we look at today’s education scenario, most of our educational institutions would fail Sir More’s criterion of education.

An educational institution is responsible not only to impart current knowledge and skills. It is also responsible to make a student ready for the future in all respects. But the truth is far from being palatable!

India as a country is growing at a rapid pace. The winds of globalization are sweeping the country and newer technologies are making their presence felt in all walks of life. Tens of thousands of jobs are being created for today’s youth. But, along with all the new opportunities of growth, the new age has also brought with it a new set of challenges.

Our age old education system is catering to students with all their technological might. Colleges are gearing up with latest infrastructure to train and educate their students about latest technologies in various fields. Much emphasis is being laid on students’ technical knowledge and expertise. In all of this, an important aspect of our students’ personality is sadly getting neglected by a few institutions— soft skills!

Our education system is churning out tens of thousands of graduates in various disciplines every year. Students complete their graduation with the hope of a bright future. But, they fail to understand that merely getting a degree is no longer sufficient to perform and succeed in today’s competitive world. A college degree just makes students eligible for jobs; it does not make them job ready or employable. That crucial aspect of every student’s personality — finer soft skills — is what metamorphoses a student into a successful professional.

The chasm between the industry’s requirements in terms of employable graduates and the current skills of our young graduates is so deep that corporate houses find it very difficult to get job-ready talent. Companies struggle to find graduates with the right mix of technical know-how and confidence in their abilities. It is a fact that many companies have to spend huge sums just to make their recruits get a sense of professionalism.
